Start the Conversation

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Training

Developed and led by Artistic Director Will Luera, Improv Asylum’s EDI training programs aim to take essential issues and break them down in a fun and approachable way. These exercises encourage people to play together, promoting change from within by amplifying awareness of the dynamics and structures that might be causing friction in an organization. We’re not going to solve these problems overnight, but we find that starting the conversation is the best way to approach long-term change.

IA Innovation has developed a series of targeted programs to tackle these issues that can be booked individually or as part of an ongoing series.

LeadershiP Image Building SEminar

This session is perfect for building leadership qualities for your organization by developing courage, confidence, and mentorship skills found in today’s best leaders. The seminar focuses on one person, acting as a sculptor, molds one or more people acting as statues, using only gentle verbal directions or mirror-image modeling.

Forum Discussion

During this seminar, participants are invited to stop a performance - often a short scene in which someone was being oppressed in some way - for example, a typically chauvinist man mistreating a woman or a factory owner mistreating an employee. During this process, the audience could propose any solution, by calling out suggestions to the actors who would improvise the changes on stage. During this, actors can bring audience members into the performance, to have an input into the dramatic action they were watching.

Playback Workshop Program

Breaking repression involves asking the participant to remember a particular moment when he or she felt especially repressed, accepted it, and submitted to act in a manner contrary to his or her own desires. It is necessary that the choice discussed is a particular incident rather than a general sense of oppression. The participant describes that incident, which is then reconstructed and re-enacted with other participants of his choosing. This performance is repeated, except that this time the repressed is asked to fight to impose his or her will while the others involved are invited to maintain the repression.

Facilitation Services

We also offer discussion leading and facilitation of an 8-part discussion on the intersectionality of EDI in the workplace. The eight talking points include:

  • BIPOC

  • Women and Female Identifying

  • LGBTQIA

  • Age

  • Motor, Cognitive, and Neural

  • Body Image

  • Cultural, Socio-Economic

  • Religious and Political
